Green Data Center

It's a fact that servers use energy and give off excessive heat. It's also a fact that a server that is only 15% utilized costs just as much to run as a server that is 100% utilized. And the growth of data center energy spending far outpaces the rate at which IT budgets grow, dangerously crowding out other vital IT initiatives and projects.

Virtualization can help by reducing heat and expense. Virtualization lets you use fewer servers and expend less power. In fact, it's been said that perhaps the greenest server and storage devices in the data center are the ones that don't exist! By consolidating and virtualizing servers and storage devices, you can:

  • Manage multiple workloads from a single location and, in the process, reduce server sprawl, increase floorspace and power availability.
  • Consolidate workloads from underutilized devices onto fewer, more efficient systems.
  • Increase the total amount of available disk space and optimize utilization rates.
  • Improve availability of applications.

The green data center is a key area of focus for Expert Server Group in our efforts to improve data center efficiency. Virtualization technologies, like VMware is one important step toward a green data center.

Recycle IT

Any equipment that is not working or is more than five years old should be recycled. Some recyclers will charge a fee to accept old computer equipment, especially monitors. But you can find a recycler near you by visiting the National Center for Electronics Recycling web site.
